Board-certified ophthalmologist providing prompt diagnosis and treatment of retinal vessel occlusions in Roslyn Heights, Nassau County, and the North Shore of Long Island.

A retinal vessel occlusion occurs when blood flow to or from the retina becomes blocked, leading to sudden or progressive vision changes. These conditions can affect either retinal veins or arteries and may result in blurred vision, visual distortion, or significant vision loss in one eye. Retinal vessel occlusions are often associated with systemic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or cardiovascular disease.

At Politi Eyecare & Aesthetics, retinal vessel occlusions are evaluated with a comprehensive, retina-focused approach. Advanced imaging and diagnostic testing are used to assess retinal circulation, identify associated swelling or bleeding, and determine the severity of the condition. Prompt diagnosis is essential to preserve vision and guide appropriate treatment.

Management focuses on stabilizing vision, treating retinal complications, and coordinating care with primary care physicians or specialists when systemic risk factors are identified.

Types of Retinal Vessel Occlusions

Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal vein occlusions occur when blood flow out of the retina is blocked, leading to retinal swelling and bleeding. Depending on the location of the blockage, this may be classified as a branch retinal vein occlusion or a central retinal vein occlusion. Vision changes may range from mild to severe, and ongoing monitoring is often required.

Retinal Artery Occlusion

Retinal artery occlusions occur when blood flow into the retina is interrupted and are considered an ocular emergency. Sudden, painless vision loss in one eye may be a sign of retinal artery occlusion and requires immediate medical evaluation. These events may be associated with underlying cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease and often prompt further systemic workup.

Treatment for Retinal Vessel Occlusions

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the occlusion and may include close observation, intravitreal injections to reduce retinal swelling, laser therapy in select cases, and coordination of systemic medical care. The goal of treatment is to preserve remaining vision, manage complications, and reduce the risk of further vision loss.
